This is one of a series of circulating commemoratives issued in the 1920's and 1930's which today form an interesting but inexpensive set. This particular one commemorates Alberto Santos Dumont and was issued 1936-38. It is the last silver coin struck for circulation in Brazil. The réis was abolished in 1942 with the reform of the coinage in that year.
Wikipedia comments, "Alberto Santos-Dumont (20 July 1873 – 23 July 1932) was a Brazilian aeronaut, sportsman, inventor, and one of the few people to have contributed significantly to the early development of both lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air aircraft."
