This is one of a series of circulating commemoratives issued in the 1920's and 1930's which today form an interesting but inexpensive set. This particular one commemorates president and dictator Getulio Vargas and was issued 1938, 1940, 1942. A 400 réis honoring Oswaldo Cruz (KM 539) was also struck in 1938. It is the last of the denomination. The réis was abolished in 1942 with the reform of the coinage in that year.

Recorded mintage: 10,620,000.

Specification: 5.44 g, copper-nickel, 23 mm diameter.
