Brazil 1939 500 reis

This is one of a series of circulating commemoratives issued in the 1920's and 1930's which today form an interesting but inexpensive set. This particular one commemorates Joaquim Machado de Assis and was issued 1939 only. It is the last of the denomination. The réis was abolished in 1942 with the reform of the coinage in that year.

Wikipedia comments, "Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (21 June 1839 – 29 September 1908), was a pioneer Brazilian novelist, poet, playwright and short story writer, widely regarded as the greatest writer of Brazilian literature."
