Bolivia 1855-PTS MJ 4 soles
This specimen was lot 1641 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA: Republic, AR 4 soles, 1855. Details weak on palm tree, some hairlines, Unc." This specimen is a four soles (nominally equal to four Mexican reales but debased) minted at La Paz and dated 1855. The obverse bust is of Simon Bolivar, liberator of South America and the namesake of Bolivia. The Potosi mint produced debased four soles from 1853 to 1858. These coins, along with contemporaneous debased strikes from La Paz mint, flooded South America and were denounced by Bolivia's neighbors, to no avail. The final issue of four soles, in 1860, returned to the colonial standard of 0.903 fine. Bolivia converted to decimal coinage in 1864.
