Bolivia 1855-PAZ F 4 soles KM-125
This specimen is a four soles (nominally equal to four Mexican reales but debased) minted at La Paz and dated 1855. The obverse bust is of Simon Bolivar, liberator of South America and the namesake of Bolivia. This specimen was lot 31150 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,410. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 4 Soles 1855 Paz-F, MS63 NGC. Attractively toned with sharp details -- a very scarce grade for this branch mint issue."
The La Paz mint produced only debased four soles from 1853 to 1858. These coins, along with contemporaneous debased strikes from the Potosi mint, flooded South America and were denounced by Bolivia's neighbors, to no avail. Only one issue in 1860 from the Potosi of the four soles would return to standard weight for this denomination.
