This specimen is a four soles (nominally equal to four Mexican reales but lightweight and debased) minted at La Paz and dated 1854. The obverse bust is of Simon Bolivar, liberator of South America and the namesake of Bolivia.

The La Paz mint produced only debased four soles coins from 1853 to 1858. These coins, along with contemporaneous debased strikes from the Potosi mint, flooded South America and were denounced by Bolivia's neighbors, to no avail. Only one issue in 1860 from the Potosi of the four soles would return to standard weight for this denomination.
