CNG Lissner sale, lot 1165

This specimen was lot 1165 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $907.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Republic. 1825-present. AR 1/2 Sol. La Paz mint. Dated 1855 PAZ P. La Paz head of Bolivar. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 65. Superb choice UNC with hues of lavender blue and amber. Very rare three year type and almost never seen in this wonderful grade. Purchased from Louis Collins, November 1980." The La Paz mint produced these debased half sol coins 1855-56. These coins, along with contemporary issues from the Potosi mint, flooded South America and were denounced by Bolivia's neighbors, to no avail. Though the Potosi mint would eventually reform the coinage and produce standard silver weights, La Paz mint would close.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.65 g, 0.667 fine silver, this specimen Ø16 mm, 1.58 g, 6h axis.

Catalog reference: KM 127; Y 17.
