Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 300

This specimen was lot 300 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,223 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1788. Carlos III. Potosí. PR. 8 escudos. Sin clavos en la armadura. Bellísima. Brillo original. Ex Colección Elariz. Muy rara así. S/C. (kingdom of Spain, Charles III, eight escudos of 1788, Potosi mint, without rivets on armor. Exquisite, original luster, very rare thus, uncirculated.)"

While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources.
