Peru 1788-L IJ 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 4803 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it sold for 1400 CHF (about US$1,771 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PERU Carlos III. 1759-1788. 8 Escudos 1788, Lima. IJ. Min. justiert. Sehr schön. (Peru, Charles III, 1759-88, eight escudos of 1788, Lima mint. A few adjustment marks, very fine.)"
This coin was minted in Lima, Peru, in 1788. It is one of a type struck 1772-89. The later issues (1785-89) are considered a separate subtype as the fineness was lowered from .901 to .875. Mintmaster IJ is listed for 1787-1804. This coin would have traded for US$15.50 before the Civil War.
