This specimen was lot 2938 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 11,000 CHF (about US$13,536 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Basel, Bistum Johann II. von Reinach-Hirzbach, 1705-1737. Taler 1716. Büste des Bischofs nach rechts. Rv. Auffliegender Doppeladler mit Wappen auf der Brust. Randschrift. Sehr selten. Etwas justiert. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Switzerland, bishopric of Basel, John II of Reinach-Hirzbach, 1705-37, thaler of 1716. Obverse: bust of bishop to right; reverse: crowned imperial eagle with arms on breast. Planchet flaws, adjustment marks, very rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This is the only thaler struck by the bishop of Basel, as opposed to the city, in the eighteenth century. The town, being Protestant, forced the bishop to reside in a neighboring village.
