Sincona sale 102, lot 5073

This specimen was lot 5073 in Sincona Auction 102 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 375 CHF (about US$565 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Basel, Bistum Basel Johann Konrad II. von Reinach-Hirzbach, 1705-1737. Halbbatzen 1717, Pruntrut. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion SINCONA 26, Zürich, Oktober 2015, Los 3710. (Switzerland, bishopric of Basel, John Conrad II of Reinach-Hirzbach, 1705-37, half batzen of 1717, Pruntrut mint. Very Fine-Extremely Fine.)"

The bishops of Basel were expelled from the town during the Reformation. He resided in Pruntrut and normally issued coins from there. This type was struck 1717-19. This specimen realized over six times the catalog value. Half a batzen made two kreuzer.
