Basel 1718 rappen
This specimen was lot 4032 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 1,300 CHF (about US$1,751 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Bistum Basel Johann Konrad II. von Reinach-Hirzbach, 1705-1737. Rappen 1718, Pruntrut. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. (Switzerland, bishopric of Basel, John Conrad II of Reinach-Hirzbach, 1705-37, rappen of 1718, Pruntrut mint. Very rare, Extremely fine.)"
The bishop of Basel was driven from his seat when Basel turned Protestant during the Reformation. He resided in Pruntrut and issued coins from there. This type was struck 1718-19 and is very scarce, as are most of the bishop's coins. One rappen was half a kreuzer or one-eighth of a batzen. The modern rappen of 21st century Switzerland is 1/100 of a franc.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.41 g, billon, 14 mm diameter, this specimen 0.36 g.
