Zurich 1716 thaler Dav-1783
This specimen was lot 2609 in UBS sale 83 (Zürich, September 2009) where it sold for CHF 1200 (about US$1380 including buyer's fee). The catalog description noted,
"Taler 1716. Gelblich-grüne Patina. Vorzüglich-FDC," (Zurich 1716 thaler, gold-green patina, extremely fine-uncirculated).
The second specimen was lot 4649 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,451 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Zürich, Stadt und Kanton, Taler 1716, Zürich. Mit Randschrift. Äusserst seltene Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-FDC. (Switzerland, city and canton of Zürich, thaler of 1716, Zürich mint. Extremely rare condition, About Uncirculated.)"
This type was struck in Zurich 1713-17 and was one of a series of thalers struck throughout the eighteenth century. Many of the later issues were "city view" thalers. The obverse legend, "MONETA REIPUBLICAE TIGURINAE," means "coin of the Republic of Zurich."
