Sincona sale 91, lot 3655

This specimen was lot 3655 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 2,800 CHF (about US$3,700 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Zürich, Stadt und Kanton, Taler o. J. (um 1710), Zürich. Sogenannter Schanzentaler. Seltene Variante mit Blumenboden und Wappen im Perlkreis. Innenkreis. Zackenrand. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Leicht gereinigt. (Switzerland, canton of Zürich, undated thaler, circa 1710, Zürich mint. so-called "entrenchment thaler", rare variety with flowered floor under the lion and inner circle of pearls. Reeded edge. Very fine-extremely fine, Lightly cleaned.)"

Davenport and the SCWC attribute this rare issue to the 1680's. Stylistically, it is more a medal than a coin. The nickname likely refers to the view of the city's defenses on the reverse.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 27.05 g.
