Sincona sale 91, lot 3093

This specimen was lot 3093 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 13,000 CHF (about US$17,178 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Bistum Basel, Wilhelm Rink von Baldenstein, 1608-1628. Taler 1625, Pruntrut. Vierfeldiges Stifts- und Familienwappen, dahinter gekrönter Kaiser Heinrich mit dem Modell des Basler Münsters. Rv. Nimbierter, gekrönter Doppeladler. Von grosser Seltenheit. Sehr schön. Am Rand und bei der Jahreszahl bearbeitet. (Switzerland, bishopric of Basel, William Rink of Baldenstein, 1608-28, thaler of 1625, Pruntrut mint. Obverse: quartered arms of the bishop and bishopric, behind, the emperor Henry stands with a model of the cathedral; reverse: nimbate, crowned double headed eagle. Of high rarity, Very fine, Tooled on edge and around the date.)"

This is one of a few thalers struck by the bishop of Basel, as opposed to the city, in the seventeenth century. The town, being Protestant, forced the bishop to reside in a neighboring village.
