Basel 1624 thaler Dav-4604
This specimen was lot 4042 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 180 CHF (about US$250 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Basel, Stadt und Kanton, Taler 1624, Basel. Adler nach links. Sehr schön. (Switzerland, canton of Basel, thaler of 1624, Basel mint, eagle to left, Very Fine.)"
This type with the eagle facing left was struck 1623-24, 1638-39; the latter two dates are rare. Another thaler, Dav-4605, has the eagle facing right. Some thalers of 1624 have "BASILEN" in the obverse legend instead of "BASILENSIS", as here.
Record mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.2 g, silver, 43 mm diameter, this specimen 28.33 g.
