Austrian Netherlands 1751(l) 10 liards
This specimen was lot 1299 in Jean Elsen sale 163 (Brussels, November 2025), where it sold for €420 (about US$485 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Maria Theresia (1740-1780), AR 10 oorden, 1751, Brugge. Vz/ Bourgondisch kruis. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild van Oostenrijk-Bourgondië. Zeldzaam. Mooie patina. (county of Flanders, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, silver ten liards of 1751, Bruges mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross; reverse: crowned arms of Austria-Burgundy. Rare, nice patina, Extremely Fine.)"
This type was struck in 1750-54 at Antwerp (shown here) and Bruges during the reign of Maria Theresia. This denomination was replaced by the 14 liards in 1755 altho ten liards continued to be struck on occasion until 1793. The Austrians lost Belgium to Revolutionary France in 1797. After the fall of Napoleon in 1815, Belgium passed to the king of the Netherlands.
