Austrian Netherlands 1752(h) 1/4 ducaton
This specimen was lot 678 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €140 (about US$182 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR quart de ducaton, 1752, Anvers. D/ B. dr. et diad. à d., à la grande tête. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Fines traces d'ajustage. Patiné. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, quarter ducaton of 1752, Antwerp mint. Obverse: draped and diademed bust right; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Traces of adjustment marks, toned, Very Fine.)"
This type was struck in 1749-53 at Antwerp and Bruges during the reign of Maria Theresia. The ducaton denomination was a holdover from Spanish rule in the seventeenth century and was struck until 1755, when it was superseded by the kronenthaler. The Austrians lost Belgium to Revolutionary France in 1797.
