Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 664

This specimen was lot 664 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €420 (about US$546 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR ducaton, 1751, Anvers. D/ B. dr. et diad. à d., avec pendant d'oreille. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Fines griffes au droit. Légère fin de plaque et petit coup sur la tranche. Belle patine. presque Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, silver ducaton of 1751, Antwerp mint. Obverse: draped and diademed bust right with earring; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Fine scratches on the obverse, rim nick, nice patina, about Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck in 1749-54 during the reign of Maria Theresia. The ducaton denomination was a holdover from Spanish rule in the seventeenth century and was replaced by the kronenthaler in 1755. The Austrians lost Belgium to Revolutionary France in 1797.

Reported Mintage: 285,000 for 1749-52.
