Jean Elsen sale 164, lot 1090

This specimen was lot 1090 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €725 (about US$1,009 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AV souverain, 1751, Anvers. Premier type. Module réduit. Tranche cordonnée en creux. D/ B. couronné à d. R/ Écu échancré d'Autriche-Bourgogne, couronné, sur une croix de Bourgogne. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, gold souverain of 1751, Antwerp mint, first type, small module, reeded edge. Obverse: crowned bust right; reverse: crowned armed of Austria-Burgundy over a Burgundian cross. Very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1750-52 at Antwerp and Bruges (lion mintmark). It was part of the coinage reform of 1749 which attempted to restore the finances of the Low Countries, devastated by the War of the Spanish Succession. It was redesigned in 1751 to show round arms on the reverse (KM 17).

Specification: 5.53 g, 0.919 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, engraved by Jacques Roëttiers; this specimen 5,50 g.
