Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 683

This specimen was lot 683 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €280 (about US$364 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR double escalin, 1752 (sur 1751), Anvers. D/ Lion deb. à g., brandissant une épée et ten. l'écu de Bourgogne. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, double escalin of 1752, 1752/1 overdate, Antwerp mint. Obverse: lion rampant left, brandishing a sword and supporting the arms of Burgundy; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck in 1751-53 at Antwerp and Bruges during the reign of Maria Theresia. The escalin denomination was a holdover from Spanish rule in the seventeenth century and was struck until the collapse of the ancien regime but the double escalin seems to have been less popular. The Austrians lost Belgium to Revolutionary France in 1797.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.562 fine silver; this specimen 9,88 g.

Catalog reference: KM 16, W. 1121; VH 819.
