Jean Elsen sale 143, lot 942

This specimen was lot 942 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it sold for €130 (about US$170 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR escalin, 1753, Anvers. Troisième type. D/ Lion deb. à g., brandissant une épée et ten. l'écu de Bourgogne. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, silver escalin of 1753, Antwerp mint, third type. Obverse: lion rampant left, brandishing a sword and hold the shield of Burgundy. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This type is listed for 1751-57 and 1763-68 from Antwerp (shown here), Bruges (lion mintmark) and Brussels (angel face mintmark). On the death of Charles VI in 1740, the redoubtable Maria Theresia was crowned Archduchess of Austria and queen of Hungary but, being a woman, could not be given the imperial crown. Therefore, after much debate and a war fomented by Frederick the Great of Prussia, her husband Francis of Lorraine was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1745. The Austrians lost Belgium to Revolutionary France in 1797. After the fall of Napoleon in 1815, Belgium passed to the king of the Netherlands.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: billon, this specimen 4,92 g.

Catalog reference: KM 15, W. 1124; V.K. 99.
