Austrian Netherlands 1753(h) 20 liards
This specimen was lot 688 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €140 (about US$182 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR 5 sols (20 liards), 1753, Anvers. D/ Croix de Bourgogne. R/ Ecu couronné, entre un rameau et une palme. Fines traces d'ajustage. Belle patine. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, five sols/twenty liards of 1753, Antwerp mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross; reverse: crowned arms between a olive branch and a palm frond. Light adjustment marks, Very Fine.)"
The twenty liard denomination (or five sols) was introduced in 1750 as part of the Austrian reform of the coinage. This type was struck in 1750-54 at Antwerp and Bruges and then abandoned. The Austrians lost Belgium to Revolutionary France in 1797.
