Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 689

This specimen was lot 689 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €700 (about US$910 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR 5 sols (20 liards), 1754, Anvers. D/ Croix de Bourgogne. R/ Ecu couronné, entre un rameau et une palme. Rare. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, five sols/twenty liards of 1754, Antwerp mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross; reverse: crowned arms between a olive branch and a palm frond. Rare, Very Fine.)"

The twenty liard denomination (or five sols) was introduced in 1750 as part of the Austrian reform of the coinage. This type was struck in 1750-54 at Antwerp and Bruges and then abandoned. The Austrians lost Belgium to Revolutionary France in 1797.
