The first specimen was lot 1399 in Jean Elsen sale 115 (Brussels, December 2012) where it sold for €70 (about US$107 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR double escalin, 1753, Anvers. Droit: Lion debout à gauche, brandissant une épée et tenant l'écu de Bourgogne. Revers: Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia (1740-80), silver double escalin of 1753, Antwerp mint. Obverse: lion rampant to left, brandishing a sword and bearing a shield of Burgundy; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 913 in Jean Elsen sale 127 (Brussels, December 2015), where it sold for €340 (about US$437 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR double escalin, 1753, Anvers. D/ Lion deb. à g., brandissant une épée et ten. l'écu de Bourgogne. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Tache au revers. Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, silver double escalin of 1753, Antwerp mint. Obverse: lion facing left, brandishing a sword and shield with the arms of Burgundy; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Reverse stain, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck in 1751-53 during the reign of Maria Theresia. This denomination was accompanied by a single escalin or schelling and marks a resumption of coinage for the Austrian Netherlands, which had lapsed about 1706. It was replaced by the ten liarda and 14 liards in 1755. The Austrians lost Belgium to Revolutionary France in 1797. After the fall of Napoleon in 1815, Belgium passed to the king of the Netherlands.

Specification: 9.6 g, silver, probably debased, 28 mm diameter; the first specimen is 9.90 g, the second specimen 9,88 g.
