Austrian Netherlands 1753(h) 1/8 ducaton
This specimen was lot 1100 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €110 (about US$153 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR huitième de ducaton, 1753, Anvers. D/ B. dr. et diad. à d., avec pendant d'oreille. R/ Écu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Fines traces d'ajustage. Patine foncée. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, Slight traces of adjustment marks, Antwerp mint. Very Fine.)"
This type was struck 1749-53 at Antwerp and Bruges. It was the same diameter as the escalin but lighter and of higher purity silver. The ducaton denomination was a holdover from Spanish rule in the seventeenth century and marks a resumption of coinage for the Austrian Netherlands, which had lapsed about 1706. It was replaced by the kronenthaler in 1755.
