Jean Elsen sale 160, lot 1202

This specimen was lot 1202 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €400 (about US$507 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), Cu double liard, 1752, Anvers. D/ B. à d., avec collier de perles. R/ Inscription dans une couronne. Extrêmement rare. Patine verte. Beau à Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, copper double liard of 1752, Antwerp mint. Obverse: bust right with pearl necklace; reverse: inscription under a crown. Extremely rare, green patina, fine to very fine.)"

The liard was the smallest denomination and was 1/240 of a ducaton. This double liard was struck at Antwerp (shown here) and Bruges 1749-54 and the 1750 is the most common date.

Recorded mintage: unknown but the key date.

Specification: 7.5 g, copper, 27 mm diameter, this specimen is 6,94 g.
