Austrian Netherlands 1750(h) escalin
This specimen was lot 685 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €120 (about US$156 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR escalin, 1750, Anvers. Deuxième type. Tranche cordonnée en creux. D/ Lion deb. à g., ten. une épée et l'écu d'Autriche-Bourgogne. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. presque Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, silver escalin of 1750, Antwerp mint, second type, reeded edge. Obverse: lion rampant left, brandishing a sword and supporting the arms of Burgundy; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. about Extremely Fine.)"
This type was struck in 1749-50 during the reign of Maria Theresia. The escalin denomination was a holdover from Spanish rule in the seventeenth century and was struck until the collapse of the ancien regime. The Austrians lost Belgium to Revolutionary France in 1797.
