Sincona sale 18, lot 3119

This specimen was lot 3119 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 225 (about US$296 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Doppelgulden 1854. Wien Auf die Hochzeit. Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (Austria, double gulden of 1854, on the marriage of the emperor, extremely fine.)"

This commemorative is mentioned in Davenport but not in the SCWC, probably because of its semimedallic nature. The wedding was a success but the marriage was not; the beautiful "Sisi" turned out to be a manic-depressive who was murdered by an anarchist.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 25.98 g, 0.900 fine silver, lettered edge, 36 mm diameter, this specimen 25.93 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-19; Herinek 45, Veselý 4, Kahnt 351. Jl. 300, unlisted in the SCWC.
