Austria 1854-A ducat Fr-490
This specimen was lot 20206 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $5,462.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Franz Joseph I gold Ducat 1854A, Proof 64 Ultra Cameo NGC, flashy mirror surfaces with a deep cameo effect on the bust. Highly attractive and very rare as a Proof, the only piece graded as such by NGC or PCGS." This type was struck 1852-59 only but is common. Gold ducats were struck throughout Franz Josef's long reign and come in many types. This date is known from Vienna, Kremnitz, Venice and Karlsburg.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common. The proofs are not mentioned in the SCWC.
