Austria 1853-B thaler Dav-17
This specimen was lot 4926 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €6,000 (about US$8,254 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KAISERREICH ÖSTERREICH, Franz Joseph I., 1848-1916. Konv.-Taler 1853 B, Kremnitz. RR Herrliche Tönung, winz. Kratzer, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung Kommerzialrat Dr. Herbert Wenzel, Wien. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, convention thaler of 1853, Kremnitz mint. Very rare, superb toning, hairlines, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This intermediate type was struck 1852-56 at Vienna and Kremnitz and is scarcer than preceding (Dav-14, 28.06 g) and succeeding types (Dav-21, 18.52 g). Altho the auctioneers call this a convention thaler, it is not, being smaller and lighter.
