Austria 1826-A 5 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 1263 in Jean Elsen sale 165 (Brussels, June 2026), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"AUTRICHE, François Ier (1806-1835), AR 5 Kreuzer, 1826 A, Vienne. Très rare. Traces d'ajustage au revers. Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe. (empire of Austria, Francis I, 1806-35, silver five kreuzer of 1826, Vienna mint. Very rare, traces of adjustment marks on the reverse, nice patina, very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
This denomination, 1/24 of a thaler, was struck in various types 1815-67. This one, with the short haired bust of emperor Francis I, was issued from Vienna 1825-30. Few were made and the type is now scarce. It is improbable that mint workers bothered to adjust the planchets of so small a coin. The lines on the reverse are likely from the rollers used to make the strip prior to punching the blanks.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.33 g, 0.438 fine silver, 22 mm diameter, reeded edge.
