Austria 1774-A IC FA 20 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 23037 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. 20 Kreuzer, 1774-A IC-FA. Vienna Mint. Maria Theresa. NGC MS-67. Undoubtedly the finest known for the denomination under this Empress in the NGC census, the present Gem offers a stunning level of quality that seems impossible to surmount. The fields are seemingly flawless, with a superb level of frosting to the devices that imparts a strong cameo nature despite merely being a business strike." The SCWC shows many different twenty kreuzer for 1772, including issues from Vienna (shown here), Hall, Prague, Karlsburg, Kremnitz and Günzburg. Some bear the bust of Joseph II and others, such as this one, depict his mother Maria Theresia. This type was struck 1767-80. Twenty kreuzer equalled one-sixth of a convention thaler.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common.
Specification: 6.68 g, 0.583 fine silver.
