This specimen was lot 30050 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $14,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria. Joseph II Taler 1769 A-IC-SK MS63 NGC, Vienna mint. Order of St. Stephen and Order of the Golden Fleece. A praiseworthy representative of this fleeting taler issue showcasing attractive gunmetal tone over semi-reflective surfaces tinged in iridescent lilac and gold. Highly challenging so fine, and the current "plate coin" on the NGC World Coin Price Guide, this offering represents one of only two examples certified in Mint State by that service to date. From the Cape Coral Collection of European Crowns." Joseph II, son of Maria Theresia, was featured on many Austrian thalers during his mother's lifetime. These include Dav-1161 (Vienna mint), Dav-1162 (Vienna mint, shown here), Dav-1163 (Vienna mint), Dav-1164 (Hall mint), Dav-1165 (Prague mint) and Dav-1166 (Günzburg mint). This one, with the emperor wearing the sash of the Order of St. Stephen, is rare.
