Sincona sale 39, lot 4090

This specimen was lot 4090 in Sincona sale 39 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 450 CHF (about US$540 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA, Joseph II. 1765-1790 Konventionstaler 1766. Wien Mit I.C.-S.K. beim Adler. Fast vorzüglich. Schrötlingsfehler, justiert. (Holy Roman Empire, Joseph II, 1765-90, convention thaler of 1766, Vienna mint. About extremely fine. Planchet defect, adjustment marks.)"

On the death of the emperor Francis I in 1765, his son Joseph II ascended the throne while his redoubtable mother Maria Theresia was still very much alive. This type was struck at Vienna 1765-71 and is fairly common.
