Künker sale 400, lot 382

This specimen was lot 382 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €6,500 (about US$8,433 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Josef II. 1765-1790. Konv.-Taler 1767, A/IC-SK, Wien. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 62 (6862143-011). Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. Herrliche Patina, fast Stempelglanz. (Holy Roman Empire, Joseph II, 1765-90, convention thaler of 1767, Vienna mint. Graded NGC MS62, very rare in this quality, choice example, superb patina, about uncirculated.)"

On the death of the emperor Francis I in 1765, his son Joseph II ascended the throne while his redoubtable mother Maria Theresia was still very much alive. This type was struck at Vienna 1765-71 and is fairly common.
