Künker sale 406, lot 4601

This specimen was lot 4601 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,149 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Karl VI. 1711-1740. 1/2 Reichstaler 1713, Augsburg. Von größter Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön. (Austria, Charles VI, 1711-40, half thaler of 1713, Augsburg mint. Extremely rare, handsome patina, very fine.)"

Charles was the younger brother of Joseph I and was not expected to inherit the imperial throne. As such, he was put forward as the rival candidate of Philip V for the Spanish crown. His brother's unexpected death in 1711 made him the Holy Roman Emperor and his anti-French allies quickly lost interest in placing him on the Spanish throne. This type was struck in 1713 while the Austrian army occupied Augsburg and Bavaria during the War of the Spanish Succession. Varieties exist.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 13.91 g.

Catalog reference: KM 1544, Herinek 575.
