Austria 1713 thaler Dav-1035
This specimen was lot 4598 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,837 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Karl VI. 1711-1740. Reichstaler 1713, Wien. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich. (Austria, Charles VI, 1711-40, thaler of 1713, Vienna mint. Handsome patina, extremely fine.)"
Austrian thalers for 1713 include KM 786.1/Dav-1089, KM 1522/Dav-1035 (shown here), KM 1548/Dav-1107, KM 1551/Dav-1039, KM 1552/Dav-1050, KM 1553/Dav-1046 and KM 1554/Dav-1047. This one was struck 1712-18 and is common. Charles was the younger brother of Joseph I and was not expected to inherit the imperial throne. As such, he was put forward as the rival candidate of Philip V for the Spanish crown. His brother's unexpected death in 1711 made him the Holy Roman Emperor and his anti-French allies quickly lost interest in placing him on the Spanish throne.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 28.76 g.
