Aureo sale 261, lot 276

This specimen was lot 276 in Aureo sale 261 (Barcelona, July 2014), where it sold for €440 (about US$706 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1713. Carlos III, Pretendiente. Graz. 1 taler. Bella. EBC (Charles III, pretender, thaler of 1713, Graz mint. Handsome, extremely fine.)"

Austrian thalers for 1713 include KM 786.1/Dav-1089, KM 1522/Dav-1035, KM 1548/Dav-1107, KM 1551/Dav-1039 (shown here), KM 1552/Dav-1050, KM 1553/Dav-1046 and KM 1554/Dav-1047. This type was struck 1713 and 1718 and is fairly common. Charles was the younger brother of Joseph I and was not expected to inherit the imperial throne. As such, he was put forward as the rival candidate of Philip V for the Spanish crown. His brother's unexpected death in 1711 made him the Holy Roman Emperor and his anti-French allies quickly lost interest in placing him on the Spanish throne.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-1039; KM-1551 (formerly KM 504).
