Austria 1675-IAN 2 thaler Dav-A3232
A double thaler of the Graz mint struck for Austria while Leopold I was emperor. This specimen was lot 1200 in Jean Elsen sale 108 (Brussels, March 2011) where it sold for 1,000 euros (about US$1,642.71 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SAINT EMPIRE, Léopold Ier (1657-1705), AR double Taler, 1675 IAN, Graz. Sur flan large. Pour la Styrie. Droit: B. l., drapé et cuirassé à droite, dans un polylobe. Revers: Grand écu ovale couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Rare. Petits défauts du flan sur la tranche. Très Beau" (Holy Roman Empire, Leopold I (1657-1705), silver double thaler of 1675, Graz mint, struck for Styria. Obverse: Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust facing right, within a polylobe. Reverse: large oval shield, crowned, with the Order of the Golden Fleece around. Rare, small edge faults, Very Fine.)
The type was struck 1670-84 and despite the six dates known, is rarer than many other Austrian double thalers.
