Künker sale 335, lot 4643

This specimen was lot 4643 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €1,500 (about US$1,963 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH. Erzherzog Maximilian als Landesfürst von Tirol, 1612-1618. Dicker doppelter Reichstaler 1613, Hall. Von großer Seltenheit. Henkelspur, sehr schön. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Maximilian as count of Tyrol, 1612-18, thick double thaler of 1613, Hall mint. Very rare, mount mark, very fine.)"

This one year type is actually fairly common for a double thaler. It accompanied a single thaler (Dav-3316). Austrian archduke Maximilian III (1558-1618) was never emperor but was briefly a pretender to the throne of Poland.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 57.45 g.

Catalog reference: KM 170, Dav-A3316; M./T. 393 (as a Taler); Voglh. 122 III (as a Taler).
