Künker sale 406, lot 4476

This specimen was lot 4476 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,231 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Erzherzog Maximilian als Hochmeister des Deutschen Ordens, 1585-1590-1618. Doppelter Reichstaler 1613 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1612 geändert), Hall. R Hübsche Patina, sehr schön. (Austria, archduke Maximilian as grand master of the Teutonic Order, 1585-1618, double thaler of 1613, 1613/2 overdate, Hall mint. Rare, handsome patina, very fine.)"

Altho the Teutonic Order is best remembered in history for its activities in Prussia and Latvia, these scarce double thalers were minted for them in Hall in Tyrol. The grandmaster, archduke Maximilian, ruled in Tyrol 1595-1618.
