Teutonic Order 1614 2 thaler Dav-A5854
The first specimen was lot 5625 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $1,150. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States - Teutonic Order. 2 Talers, 1614. Maximilian of Austria, 1588-1618. Master standing on ground, arms to left and helmet to right. Reverse: Emperor on horseback in circle of shields. Natural obverse flan flaws. Toned. NGC graded AU-50." The second specimen was lot 1252 in Jean Elsen sale 136 (Brussels, March 2018), where it sold for €700 (about US$1,028 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, ORDRE TEUTONIQUE, Maximilien Ier, archiduc d'Autriche (1590-1618), AR double Taler, 1614, Hall. D/ Le grand maître deb. de f., en cuirasse, ten. une grande épée, entre son écu tenu par un lion et un heaume. R/ Chevalier au galop à d., ten. une bannière, au-dessus de l'écu de l'ordre. Sur le tour, quatorze écussons de possessions autrichiennes. Très Beau. (Germany, Teutonic Order, Maximilian I, archduke of Austria, 1590-1618, silver double thaler of 1614, Hall mint. Obverse: the grand master stands facing, armored with sword and shield, shield bearing a lion and a helmet; reverse: a mounted knight charges to right bearing a flag, arms of the Order below. Very fine.)"
Altho the Teutonic Order is best remembered in history for its activities in Prussia and Latvia, these scarce double thalers were minted for them in Hall in Tyrol. Triple thalers (Dav-B5854) also exist.
