Sincona sale 9, lot 5099

This specimen was lot 5099 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011), where it sold for 52,000 CHF (about US$69,175 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LIECHTENSTEIN Karl, 1585-1627 Taler 1614. Büste des Fürsten im Harnisch nach rechts. Rv. Behelmtes, gekröntes reich verziertes Wappen. Sehr selten und prachtvolle Erhaltung. Fast vorzüglich. (Principality of Liechtenstein, Charles I, 1585-1627, thaler of 1614. Obverse: armored bust of the prince to right; reverse: helmeted, crowned, quartered arms. Very rare in this condition, choice extremely fine.)"

Silesia is considered a German State even tho the province was then under Austrian rule and is now in Poland. This type, listed for 1614, is rare like all the thalers of this locality. The cataloguers at Sincona likely listed this coin under Liechtenstein to appeal to Swiss bidders.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28,86 g.

Catalog reference: Divo 21, HMZ 2-1356, Dav-3431, KM 6.
