This specimen was lot 71451 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Teutonic Order. 1/4 Taler, 1612. Maximilian of Austria, as Grand Master. PCGS AU-55 Gold Shield. An ever popular issue, this piece is the finest certified by PCGS and offers wondrous, problem free surfaces that are enveloped by an attractive iridescence. The wear is minor and relegated to the highest points." Altho the Teutonic Order is best remembered in history for its activities in Prussia and Latvia, these scarce quarter thalers were minted for them in Hall.
