Teutonic Order 1612 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 87 in Künker Auction 423 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €650 (about US$921 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Erzherzog Maximilian als Hochmeister des Deutschen Ordens, 1585-1590-1618. 1/2 Reichstaler 1612, Hall. Der geharnischte Erzherzog steht v. v. mit Erzherzogshut, Hochmeisterkreuz, umgelegtem Mantel und Schwert in der Rechten, zu den Seiten Löwe mit dem österreichischen Bindenschild und Turnierhelm mit Helmzier, umher Blätterkranz//Turnierreiter r. mit Lanzenfahne, darunter die geteilte Jahreszahl I6 - I2 über Wappenschild mit Hochmeisterkreuz, umher 14 kleine Wappenschilde. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 105, Osnabrück 2005, Nr. 2708. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Maximilian as Grandmaster of the Teutonic Order, 1585-1590-1618, half thaler of 1612, Hall mint. Obverse: armored, mantled and capped figure of the archduke stands slightly left, holding a sword; to the left, a lion supports the arms of Austria; to the right, a feathered helmet; reverse: Mounted knight right with flagged lance, date below, above, the arms of the grandmaster, fourteen shields around. Very fine to extremely fine.)"
According to he SCWC, this should have engraver's initials "CO", which we don't see on this example. The major domains of the Teutonic Order were in Prussia, Livonia and Estonia but they had estates in the Holy Roman Empire as well, which they retained after the loss of their Baltic domains.
