SB223-72509r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72509 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Taler, 1622. Ensisheim Mint. Leopold V. NGC MS-62. An interesting issue with crossover interest. While Davenport lists the issue under Austria, Krause has it under Germany. Either way, a well made crown sized issue with a great deal of character. Ex: UBS (9/2007) Lot # 2609." Ensisheim, in upper Alsace, was the site of a mint operated by the Hapsburgs until the Thirty Years War, when the region was occupied by the French. This thaler was struck for archduke Leopold, who was never emperor.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-3347; KM-260 (listed under Alsace).
