This specimen was lot 43431 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $115. The catalog description[1] noted, "MALTA. 5 Pounds, 1972. PCGS MS-65 Gold Shield. Prooflike and nearly flawless." This commemorative was issued as part of a set to honor the independence of Malta which included KM 13 (silver pound), KM 14 (silver 2 pounds), KM 16 (gold 10 pounds), KM 17 (gold 20 pounds) and KM 18 (gold 50 pounds). Malta has since joined the EU and adopted the euro, rendering the Maltese pound obsolete.
Recorded mintage: 18,000 proofs.
Specification: 3 g, 0.917 fine gold, 0.0884 troy oz AGW.
