Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71382

This specimen was lot 71382 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $105. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. Franc, 1806-I. Limoges Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS FINE-15. Having clearly spent quite some time in circulation, this specimen nevertheless retains solid overall detail and offers a charming portrait of Napoleon. Though certified as Bayonne Mint (L), this is actually Limoges (I), as it can be determined based upon the shaking hands différent. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Lepczyk in 1984 for $10). Ex George Sobin Collection (Joseph Lepczyk - 3/1984) Lot # 1187 (part of)." This issue, from the Limoges mint, is a scarce date of a type struck 1806-07 only. A complete set of this type comprises 19 date and mintmark combinations, all rare except the 1806-A and 1806-L. In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed.

Specification: 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, 23 mm diameter, decorated edge. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
