Sincona sale 63. lot 844

This specimen was lot 844 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$313 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, konigreich, Constitution, 1791-1793. 12 Deniers 1791 / AN 3 BB, Strasbourg. François. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Gutes vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, constitutional period, twelve deniers of 1791, Strasbourg mint. Very rare in this condition, Good extremely fine.)"

This specimen is one of a type struck 1791-93 during the early stages of the French Revolution before the trial and execution of the king. Enormous quantities were produced at several temporary mints from any metal available. This is a scarce date.

Specification: brass, bronze or copper, 12.23 g, 29 mm diameter. Engraved by Benjamin Duvivier; this specimen 11.47 g.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
